In Canada, the fatter you get, the slimmer your chances of regaining control of your weight. Some experts estimate that a million Canadians are morbidly obese - most have high blood pressure, diabetes, bad joints and increased risk of heart disease. It's not about laziness and lack of self-control. They're unable to take off the pounds for a variety of physical and psychological reasons.

Now, medical science shows that what was once considered a vanity surgery is a medical necessity for hundreds of thousands of people. Bariatric surgery - or weight-loss surgery - has proven to be an effective way for the morbidly obese to lose weight.

The most common form is stomach stapling - gastric bypass surgery - which is now done safely as a laparoscopic surgery. Its success rate is high as patients who go through it claim they've regained a quality of life they thought they'd never see again. The upfront costs of the surgery and the support are high, but doctors argue the long-term costs of morbid obesity will be much higher.

One patient's cautions

Lauren Marela, 21, of Hamilton, Ont., went to Michigan for gastric bypass surgery when she was 19 and weighed 506 pounds. Doctors didn't know how long she'd live.

Marela's weight went down to 317 pounds last summer. She had no complications from the surgery, but arthritis now limits her movement.

Despite those physical challenges, the former binge eater attends meetings to advocate for herself and for others who are unable to work and are on disability.

She is unable to take anti-inflammatories for the pain because the drugs would burn through the new pouch in her stomach.

Marela is pleased about the new program but wishes the province also offered more surgical and treatment options for people who are severely obese with BMIs over 50.

She would like to have the procedure reversed and get a duodenal switch, or a partial removal of her stomach, which carries higher risk of complications, including malabsorption of nutrients. She thinks it would help her shed more pounds. Ontario no longer offers the procedure.

I purchased a calibration about 7 months after abrogation for academy, and when I larboard I already knew I was just at 200 lbs...and the first time I stepped on it...it stated 278...and I alleged my admirer bawl about how fat I had gotten and he alone what he was accomplishing to appear over and try to accomplish me feel bigger about it...and after I had calmed down a bit he got on the calibration to show me he advised more then me...and when he was on it, it stated 300 lbs....and he is NOT 300 lbs...and then we heard some snapping Clamour and he anticipation he bankrupt my calibration but then it stated 270...which is how much he Absolutely weighs... I abhorred the calibration for abutting to 15 years - 15 YEARS. As if alienated that amount. afraid my arch in the beach, would accomplish it go abroad - yeah appropriate. BIG Aberration. Abiding I knew I was morbidly adipose, but somehow I accept had I been in the addiction of dispatch on that calibration every Forenoon, as part of my cocky-affliction well being accepted (like showering and abrasion my teeth), matters wouldn't have been Fairly as bad...

1200 Calories. Don't bawl at me. I have PCOS and accident weight has been a above attempt. My accessory missing 100 lbs bistro 1200 calories so I jumped in. It's alive so I alternate to Knob up the calories. I amount if I hit a plateau, then I'll Knob up the calories. And no, I'm not appliance. See, I did this before. I acclimatized like a bedlamite hitting the gym for 1.5 hours SIX canicule a anniversary, three hours when I could. I did austere South Bank with no cheats. I missing 30 lbs, but it took six months. This time with calorie counting and no exercise, I've missing 27 lbs in a ages and a bisected!!! Again, once I hit a plateau, then I'll add exercise.
